Kurta József Erasmus hermeneutikája a 16. századi erdélyi bibliakiadásokban
Erasmus and Versions of the 16th Century Hungarian Bible Published in Transylvania
Absztrakt Standard bibliographical desk books reveal the influence of Erasmus on three
translations in Hungarian of the New Testament (1533, 1536, 1541) printed in Vienna
and Hungary, respectively. However, with the aid of supplementary data the impact of
Erasmus’s hermeneutics on the 16th century Transylvanian Bibles can also be proven. Parts
of the Bible in Hungarian translated and published by Caspar Heltai and his associates since
1549, especially the prefaces to Biblical books, also demonstrate that these translators
who all studied abroad namely in Wittenberg, were well aware of Erasmian principles of
Christian humanism.
In contrast to the simple frontispiece of the New Testament printed in 1557 by Valentin
Wagner in Brassó (Kronstadt, now Braşov in Rumania), the inside title page to the Epistles
of Paul is a richly decorated woodcut specially constructed to highlight Paulinism so
favoured by Erasmus.
