Jablonski’s Hebrew Bible in Hungary. Data and Corrections

AbsztraktDaniel Ernst Jablonski (1660–1741) published his 4to Hebrew Bible in 1699 as a corrected version of the famous second edition by Joseph ben Abraham Athias (Amsterdam, 1667). Later Jablonski also published it in small a format (16mo) in 1711. The town of Debrecen purchased 40 copies of the large format of this Hebrew Bible in 1702. For the students of the Reformed College special regulations were introduced to restrict usage or loan service of these volumes. To educate Hungarian reformed ministers this edition was in use in Debrecen only up to the second part of the 19th century. Of these forty there have remained in the old library stock three mutilated copies only. There is a fourth, nearly intact copy of the same edition, originally purchased in 1777 by G. Ráday, son of an aristocrat belonging to the Reformed Church. As a young man he studied in Berlin and Frankfurt am Oder, being tutored there by the friend of his father, i. e. Jablonsky. In historical surveys and other special studies the edition data of this Bible became erroneously mixed up with those of the 17th century Hungarian Bible and consequently became totally misinterpreted. The present study has reviewed the data of the edition in question as well as its usage in education and corrected the earlier false interpretations.
