The Occurence of Hungarian Constructing Elements of the Term ’wasted his property’ in Different Translations of the Parable of the Prodigal Son

AbsztraktThe present study has investigated the occurence of varied constructing elements of a special expression, i.e. wasted/squandered/ etc. his property/money/goods/substance etc. (διεσκόρπισεν τὴν οὐσίαν αὐτοῦ — dissipavit substantiam suam) of the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke XV. 11 to 32) in several Hungarian versions with the aim to clear up the determining factors in divergent wording by a definite version. Data are collected from 15–20 century Bible translations, altogether 26 items, prepared to and used by different denominations. First, these elements of collocation are separately scrutinized, than the result summed up according to date of the translation, than tendencies behind the chosen linguistic process are cleared up. Another stage of the study is the interpretation of implied tendencies. Dictionaries, lists of special words and other sources are consulted to shed light on the linguistic situation of equivalencies, semantics and incidencies. Consequently the influence of earlier translations on the wording of later Bibles can be indicated in Hungarian textual tradition. Individual translators’ veneration of ancient tradition and as well inclination to innovation are pointed out. Both tendencies are present in their mind and also in use by separate denominations, and the determining factors there can be clearly detected. Translation technics which on the one hand tend to be subjective, on the other hand seem influenced by objective factors, represented in selection of words and in unrevealed means of distinction.
