Hypertextual Presentation of Moses in Some Selected Hungarian Poems

AbsztraktFor the biblical texts to survive in arts, particularly in poetry, the prerequisite is the presence of an idiosyncratic function which is called poetic bearing. During the course of interpretation a new dimension opens up for the receiver: the dimension of poetic discourse. Therefore, an ancient text gains a potential new interpretation, commences a new life, so to speak. In our study the basic texts are connected to the figure of Moses, and we have grouped the chosen texts around his character, and in this particular case around the pertinent sections in the realm of verses. The poets we have chosen range from the 18th century to recent times and writing in the first person singular often identify themselves with Moses during the course of their inner struggles. We interpret those parts of the poems or the full poems in which the continuity of biblical texts can be traced. Some of the poetic sections do not support the idea of ancient belief and mission, nevertheless, there is a sharp contrast between the biblical texts and the lethargy or lack of values present in the 20th century texts. One thing, however, we can be sure about is the fact that each text further enriches the delineation of the figure of Moses. The mythological archetype survives and has its impact not only on Hungarian literature but on our global human culture as well.
